Carbon Monoxide Poisoning ... Don't let it happen to you!
The presence of carbon monoxide (CO) in our homes is dangerous.
Carbon Monoxide is a colourless and odourless gas. It is not explosive. Because you can't see, taste, or smell it, it can affect you and your family before you know it's there. Low levels of carbon monoxide exposure can cause serious health effects.
CO is harmful because it will rapidly accumulate in the blood, depleting the ability of the blood to carry oxygen.
Carbon Monoxide is produced by the incomplete combustion of fuels. It occurs when there is not enough oxygen mixed with fuel. All fuel burning appliances have the potential to produce CO in varying concentrations. CO can result from improperly vented or malfunctioning combustion appliances such as furnaces, stoves, and hot water heaters.
Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are similar to illnesses such as the flu or the start of a cold. Early warning signs are:
Headache, dizziness, nausea, fatigue
Sources of potential carbon monoxide Chimneys, wood stoves, wood and gas fireplaces, automobile and garage, gas water heaters, gas appliances, gas or kerosene heaters, gas or oil furnaces, cigarette smoke.
